Persistence: The Mother of Photography

                                                                                         Pasture, Big Sur Coast

I’m quite excited to have the opportunity to write this column, one of the great aspects of photography is the wiliness of photographers to share their knowledge and experience.  The willingness to share our craft is the foundation for the evolution of the medium in all its forms. Whether it be as a tool in the commercial world of advertising, a relater of events as in the realm of photojournalism and documentary photography or a personal expression as in fine art; the photographers of today are a product of the masters of yesterday, just as the future leaders in this medium will be because of the current teachings of today’s professionals.

My goal with this column is simple; I just want to share my thoughts and my love for photography.  Sometimes that will come in the form of helpful hints, sometimes I’ll just share a story about my experiences in the field, occasionally it will come in the form of a rant, hey I’m allowed to have one once in a while.  In fact I already have a few penned, stay tuned.  I don’t have a big enough head to think I’ll change people’s lives with this column, and that’s ok with me.  I’m perfectly satisfied with my little desolate corner of the photography world; I just hope you’ll come by to visit sometimes.

With that said, let’s get started.  It’s not every day that great images fall into our laps; you have to work to get them.  Sometimes you get them be waking up early or hiking miles in the hot, mid-day sun; heck I can’t tell you how many times I’ve went that extra mile just to get down or up to the perfect location only to think when I got there “this may not have been the best idea” click, click, click.  It sometimes takes a lot of muscle, brains and sweat to create a great image; but there’s also one other ingredient that is part of many great pictures, persistence.  The persistence to push on and keep going, the persistence to hang around that extra hour to see if there is a break in the clouds or the persistence to keep coming back again and again to the same location until the conditions are just right for image making.

This image is an example of persistence for me, I’d seen this view many times while traveling up and down California’s highway one.  The beautiful scene of what could be teased me each time I wanted to create the negative. Each time I hoped to give it a try and make the image however the conditions weren’t right.  The sky was too overcast, the grass was too brown, the sun was too high and the light was too harsh.  However, I kept the image in my head and continued to come back to this spot until finally one day everything fell into place and luckily I was there to capture it.  All told this image was about 3 years in the making, thank you persistence.
